Retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 3 Romulo “Romy” Camargo grew up in Crystal River, Florida. He was an avid athlete in his youth and entered the U.S. Army in 1995, at 19 years old. In 2008, while conducting a combat operation as part of a humanitarian mission in Meydan Kalay, his detachment was viciously ambushed. Romy was severely wounded after sustaining a gunshot wound to the back of the neck, paralyzing him from the shoulders down. In June 2015, Romy and his wife founded the “Stay in Step” Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center based in Tampa, Florida. The center’s mission is to serve returning service members and veterans with spinal cord injuries or any neurological disorder that causes paralysis. Their future aspirations are to build a new pilot center, complete with an underwater treadmill, basketball court, cafeteria, kids room, and family room. The space will also focus on healing the mind and soul.
Romy’s current living situation was not conducive to his mobility and accessibility needs. Through the generosity of the Gary Sinise Foundation, with assistance from trusted partners and the American public, a specially adapted smart home was built for him and his family. The home is one-of-a-kind, is 100% mortgage-free, and is designed with unique features to ease Romy’s daily challenges. Euro-wall donated motorized, self-opening multi slide doors to meet his unique needs and help this hero reclaim his independence. Euro-wall was honored to have the opportunity to give back to the community.
